The Wii: Bringing Husbands & Wives Closer Together
June 3, 2008 by Ryan
So I was watching Last Comic Standing and one of the female comedians was making a joke about how Halo 3 destroys relationships…something about how her boyfriend spends all day with a headset talking to little boys online. I tried to get my wife to play Halo with my friends and I but she inevitably ends up spinning in a corner staring at the sky.
Then came the Wii.
Hopefully, you’ve all had a chance to do the bowling. And I do mean all of you because even my grandparents have Wii bowled with us. The beautiful thing about the Wii is my wife loves it! I can play video games and not only is she okay with it, she plays with me. We’ve recently come across some new games that we’re kind of excited about:
MarioKart
We’re suckers enough that we ended up buying the wheels for all of our controllers, just because it’s more fun that way. We’ve linked across the internet to our friends’ Wiis and can race them from home.
American Idol
I know it’s pretty lame but my wife loves it. It came with a mic and is basically karaoke on steroids. They put Randy and Paula and Simon in it and you can go through the whole try-out to elimiation rounds. My wife was thinking though that people that do well on the game are gonna think they can do well in real life…not really true. When I can get a decent score, you know it’s not that accurate.
Rock Band
Believe it or not, but this is what my wife wants for her birthday! My brother in-law brought his Rock Band over with his Xbox 360 and we got hooked. It’s not available on Wii until the end of the month. If you haven’t heard about it, it’s basically Guitar Hero + American Idol + Drums. Yeah, you have all the instruments and have to “play” them to the colors on the screen. Trust me it is more addicting than it sounds.
Wii Fit
Another game still on the Wish List. But if you haven’t seen the commercial here it is:
The genius of the Wii, is all the accessories you have to/want to buy that make playing the games a more real-life experience. It also is a more social experience. To illustrate, my mother-in-law has friends over for Wii parties! I tried to do that with Halo, bring friends and their wives over to play, and failed miserably.

Very cool. Nintendo is incredibly smart to have created the Wii. For the most part, people playing video games just want to have fun, and the Wii makes it a social event. With people you can actually see! In the same room! We’re still having fun with Wii Sports and DDR. We’ll have to check out a few of those other games.
I love the wii! We just got Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and the whole family loves it. The Wii really is the most family-friendly system out there.
My husband and I just got a Wii and we LOVE it Ryan! I cracked up when I saw this headline. We like to bowl and play tennis, and he fishes in real life, so we fish and race cows and do all kinds of zany things. Unfortunately, our giant screen TV just went out last week, only a few weeks after we got our Wii, so we have just been watching regular ole’ tv together on what feels like a postcard, compared to the big screen we have grown attached to.
Seriously, this post could be about US! I wanted Rock Band for my birthday, too. I love Mario Kart — I should send you our Wii #’s and MK codes so we can race each other! I do have to say though I like Halo — and even though I usually end up with the most deaths … watch out if I find a rocket launcher!!
Erins last blog post..catch up.
Thanks for the recommendation Ryan. My husband and I have been thinking about getting the Wii. I think I’ll move it up higher on the priority list.
