Wizard of Outer Zone?!

December 8, 2007 by Ryan

I don’t know how many of you caught the previews for the Sci-Fi Channel Mini-Series Tin Man. My wife and I saw them and decided to watch it. I was really excited about the idea: a new take on the Wizard of Oz. I was even more intrigued when I saw some of the casting: Zooey Deschanel (Elf, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) as “Dorothy” & Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler from X2) as “The Scarecrow”.

Here is a chat I had with Dan of CinemaGaslight.com about the it:

1:32 AM me: have you been watching Tin Man?

Dan: no. I heard about it though. thought it looked pretty cool

you?

1:33 AM me: yeah we’ve DVR’d it

its very much a sci-fi production

Dan: cool

1:34 AM me: i think the idea of reinterpreting the wizard of oz is cooler than what they’ve done

Dan: oh really? so you’re not too impressed?

1:35 AM me: no, i feel like i’m watching stargate skg or whatever that is

Dan: ah…lame

1:36 AM me: i think it could be done well

1:37 AM Dan: yeah, totally

me: it is interesting but disappointing for me at least

1:38 AM Dan: that’s too bad. i kind of got that feeling when i saw that one guy was in it. adam curry or something like that?

me: its kinda painful how they incorporate some of the wizard of oz stuff

yeah me too

1:39 AM Dan: alan cumming. I was kinda close :0

that sucks

me: like oz is actually the “O.Z.” the outer zone

Dan: um..yeah…

1:40 AM me: i was actually looking forawrd o zooey deschanel (or however her name goes) from elf

i was hoping she would sing

Dan: yeah, she’s awesome

me: but ts very much not that

Dan: but not so killer here huh?

1:41 AM me: they could have got anyone to play that role and it would have made no difference

Dan: lame

1:42 AM me: in fact that’s true for all the character’s

acting ability isn’t necessary

Dan: that’s pretty disappointing

1:44 AM me: very

I’d still like to take a look at this, though now any excitement I had for it is pretty much gone. Oh well. Next time I’ll try to sound more intelligent in our conversations :)

Yeah…I don’t that any IM conversations sound THAT intelligent…Probably should have had you edit it, at least a little bit!

I was really excited about it, too, from the previews! I caught the first part with my in-laws a couple weeks ago and definitely agree with you that they could’ve done SO MUCH MORE with it. It reminded me of an English project I did where I broke down parts of the Ilead by Homer into modern songs…at the time I was just trying to get through the assignment and looking back, I could’ve done a gazillion times better by pushing it a little further. Same goes for Tin Man. Although I still kind of want to see the 2nd and 3rd parts…I think I’ll TiVo it…but it doesn’t sound like it gets any better, huh? Too bad. Such potential.

PS: You guys have been in our prayers and we totally know what you’re going through…the ups and downs. The ups start coming a lot more often :) Your little guy is going to be perfect.
