Mark McGuire Deserves the Hall of Fame

For Saving Baseball!!! Him and Sammy Sosa! Let me take you back to the year 1994. That was the year of the strike. It cancelled the World Series, it ended what could have been record-breaking performances (ie Griffey was at 40 hrs), and it killed the love for the game in many, many fans. Do you remember the empty stadiums in the following years? Do you remember how cheap the tickets were and you still didn’t want to go? I was sick of it. I grew up trading baseball cards, playing t-ball, getting autographs before the games, and I hated baseball after the strike.

Then something special happened. The homerun race! It revived interest in the game. It revived that passion for the game. Baseball players were bigger than life once again. It saved baseball for me and I am an avid fan to this day because of it.

You say, “But the balls & the players were juiced.”

I say, “I don’t care!”

That’s what we wanted needed to see! Steroids got out of hand, I agree. When it gets into the high schools, that’s bad. But at the time there wasn’t that stigma. You can’t punish one without punishing all during that period and I don’t think we should. Ask yourself this, would you be a baseball fan if it weren’t for Mark McGwire?
